Trails crisscross the Adelaide Hills and even if you’re only here for a day, you’ll find one to your liking.
Walkers have a big choice, whether it’s exploring some of the famous Heysen Trail or admiring the scenery between Waterfall Gully and Mount Lofty Summit. The Adelaide Hills is a perfect location for road cycling and mountain biking.
The Mawson and Kidman Trails
The Mawson Trail, which meanders through hills, vines and bushland, all the way to the Flinders Ranges, is perfect for mountain bike riders.
The 250 kilometre (155 mile) Kidman Trail takes walkers and cyclists along farm routes, dirt roads and forest tracks from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Clare Valley.
Each of these trails highlights the Adelaide Hills’ history. 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from Adelaide, the Yurrebilla Trail is a cultural and environmental discovery walk. The trail links Belair to Black Hill Conservation Park.
Heritage and history
Revisit the 1860s and walk the Jupiter Creek heritage trail at Echunga, you’ll see the relics of the region’s gold rush days. Take the Yurridla Aboriginal Trail in Cleland National Park for an indigenous perspective on the Adelaide Hills’ Dreamtime stories.
Something more fruity?
If you love food and wine, there are trails to take your Adelaide Hills’ holiday to another level.
Twelve wine, food and beer producers have designed the Hills Short Wine and Food Trail. It starts in Woodside and finishes in Gumeracha. It’s only a 15 minute drive between each producer. Spend a day or book some accommodation and take your time. There’s also a Cherry Trail because each summer, the Adelaide Hills become “cherry central”.
The Cherry Trail links the region’s orchards. You’re welcome to go to as many as you want and pick as much as you can.
And wine – of course
There’s a great boutique winery trail which takes you to some of the smaller wineries in the region. Wineries include Ashton, Norton Summit, Summertown and Balhannah.
There are happy trails indeed in the Adelaide Hills.
