Station Stays

Life in the outback

If you’ve ever dreamed of living like a local in the outback, station stays are the most relaxing way to do it. Sheep and cattle stations have been a huge part of South Australia's outback for more than 150 years.

You can see great landscapes and discover the outback way of life by spending some time on a cattle station. It’s not all “rough and tumble”. There are some luxury homesteads, like Bundaleer Station, that are an oasis of finery in the outback.

A choice of accommodation

Stations in the Flinders Ranges are mostly sheep properties and are generally smaller than the outback stations further north. Download the Station Stays guide to help you choose the right property. There are also some interesting activities you might like.

Accommodation styles range from modest shearers’ quarters to elegant homesteads. Cook your own food or join your “host” family for meals. You’ll enjoy cooked breakfasts and home-made dinners, lovingly created from fresh produce by your hosts. It is as much a delight for them as it will be for you.

Explore deep into the outback

Stations offer a range of experiences. Some offer superb four wheel driving (4WD) tracks to explore. Stretch your legs hiking to places off the beaten track and take a guided tour. You can even try your hand as a drover at some stations.
